Ideas for Reducing Paper Waste
- Use the duplex (double-sided setting on the printer when printing.
- Don't print out e-mails unless necessary.
- If it's a long document, only print the section you need by highlighting the information you want and then click 'File', 'Print' and in Page range select 'Selection' and then 'OK'.
- Use LESS paper! This means less ordering of supplies, less refilling paper trays and of course less filing!
Reusing Paper
- Reuse envelopes - particulary for internal mail and external mail use a sticky label to cover the old address.
- Playgroups and schools may appreciate being given odd rolls of any kind of paper (including Newspapers) for painting on or for other uses in the classroom.
- If paper has only bee printed on one side, the other side can be used for recording messages, scrap pads or for your own fax machine.
Paper - Did you know?
- For each tonne of paper recycled we can save 1,500 litres of water and 4,200 KWh of electricity. This is enough electricity to power a large house in the UK for a year.
- Once paper is landfilled it takes over 50 years to decompose.
- Ppaer is a biodegradeable material, so when it goes to landfill, it rots and produces methane, which as a greenhouse gas is 21 times more potent that carbon dioxide.
- One piece of office grade paper can be recycled seven times.
- To supply the UK's paper consumpyion, a forest the size of Wales is required each year.
- Recycled paper produces fewer polluting emissions to air (95% of air pollution) and water. Recycled paper is not usually re-bleached and where it is, oxygen rather than chlorine is usually used.
